Who is a First Generation college student?

If you are the first person in your family to go to college or you do not have a parent who earned a four-year college degree, then you are considered a First Generation college student.

Why does it matter?

The transition from high school to college can be both exciting and challenging for all students, but even more so for students who are navigating that path without the benefit of a parent or family member who has been there.

“While first-generation students are often quite academically skilled and contribute in many ways to a campus community, navigating the tangled web of college policies, procedures, jargon, and expectations can be a challenge.”

“Being a first generation college graduate means being the pivot toward more opportunities!”

“While my Samford Story is filled with fond memories and honors, I am most proud of obtaining a higher education—not just for myself but for my family!”

Chotsani J. “Chots” Holifield
B.A. in Political Science Magna Cum Laude 2022 and Juris Doctorate Candidate in the Cumberland School of Law, 2024.

What is available?

  • Priority access to academic consultations or academic coaching. These one-on-one appointments can help you set academic goals, identify resources, and create an academic plan, as well as find accountability and encouragement.
  • Opportunity to network with other First Generation students, faculty, and staff.
  • Eligibility to receive more regular updates from your faculty through the Academic Success Center’s Progress Report Campaigns.
  • Leadership and service opportunities designed especially for First Generation students.
  • Access to possible scholarships for First Generation college students.
