The Alabama Association of Historians (AAH) and the Alabama region of Phi Alpha Theta history honor society will meet jointly at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9. About 125 historians, history teachers and students from Alabama schools will attend the meetings in Dwight Beeson Hall.
Historians Steve Noll of the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ of Florida and Dave Tegeder of Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Fla., will give the AAH keynote address during a 6 p.m. dinner Friday at the Southern Progress Building, adjacent to the Samford campus. Their topic will be "Ditch of Dreams: The Cross-Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida's Future."
The AAH will meet Friday afternoon and half a day Saturday.
Jim Baggett, head archivist for Birmingham Public Library, will give the luncheon address for the Phi Alpha Theta meeting. His topic will be "Goin' to Church: Preserving the History of Birmingham's Civil Rights Movement."
Phi Alpha Theta will meet all day Saturday, with students from Alabama universities and colleges presenting a total of 35 papers. #
