Testimonials
Health Law and Compliance
"The Master of Laws program at Cumberland School of Law was an incredible and invaluable experience. I have aspired to be a health care attorney since my first law school summer clerkship. That summer, I was entrenched in the health care legal world and became eager to endeavor into learning as much as I could to eventually practice in the field of health law—by giving back to our essential medical community in guiding them through the complexities of the ever-evolving regulatory and compliance challenges facing them day-to-day. Cumberland’s LLM with a focus in health law and compliance aided me in accomplishing just that. Today, I practice in the areas of healthcare regulatory compliance and transactional law at Maynard, Cooper & Gale. I would not be where I am today—doing what I love at such an innovative, respected institution that emphasizes a fulfilling and quality environment—without my LLM from Cumberland. From the intriguing courses, to the exceptionally experienced and engaged professors, I highly recommend Cumberland’s online master’s program for any professional seeking to complement and enhance their expertise to obtain a desired career or elevate a current career."
—Mitchell Surface, JD/LLM ’21
Higher Education Law and Compliance
“Last year, at age 35, I was named general counsel at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ of Montevallo. I became one of the 10 youngest university general counsels in the country according to my professional association. I believe my LLM in higher education law and compliance from Cumberland School of Law gave me a depth of knowledge to effectively ‘punch above my weight’ in higher education law. I knew if I wanted to set myself apart in such a competitive field, I would need to have something that showed I was committed to this industry and to working toward being an expert in it. The hiring committee was intrigued that Cumberland School of Law offered an LLM in higher education law and compliance, and I believe it has played a role in my career advancement.”
—Steven Boydstun, JD ’17, LLM ’22, general counsel, Â鶹ÊÓƵ of Montevallo
Legal Operations
“I have a keen interest in the intersection of the profession of law and business of legal enterprise. A great law firm, no matter the size, will run better if the lawyers have an idea of how to budget for a specific matter, how to hire the right person to work for them, how to protect their clients’ privacy, or how to make sure that they are managing their firm’s risk properly. When I learned that I could get an LLM in this area of study—increase my professional value while feed my curiosity—I knew Cumberland was the program for me. The course work is practical and intended to translate to success in the business of operating a law firm. Law school taught me to think like a lawyer. Earning my LLM from Cumberland School of Law taught me to think like a COO.”
—Jill Rothstein, JD, LLM ’20, general counsel, South Carolina State Bar
